A title for a new chapter

I was directing the NFTY-GER region when I was engaged to a soon-to-be-ordained Cantor. Paul and I discussed the fact that there was no name for a Cantor’s wife (there was a Rebbetzin, but this wasn’t the same). So he created a new title for me: “Chazzanette”. I’ve shared this story many times over 25 years when people have asked me what to call a Cantors wife-invoking Paul’s name and creativity. Long before I knew what it meant to be a wife, and a clergy spouse, Paul saw me and helped me walk into this big new life chapter with confidence and a fresh, new Title. His memory is such a blessing.
