Philipp Liebenthal

Merchant of Halle · engaged 1887

Margarete Reichenbach’s father, documented in 1887 as a merchant of Halle.

A printed announcement issued at Hettstedt at Pentecost 1887 records the engagement of Philipp Liebenthal, a merchant of Halle, to Jenny Schottländer, the only daughter of L. Schottländer and his wife née Salzmann.

Philipp and Jenny later became the parents of Margarete Liebenthal, who married Paul Reichenbach in 1908. They were the maternal grandparents of Ruth and Dolf Reichenbach.

The family identifies Philipp in this solo portrait and beside Jenny in the double portrait. The identification is supported by comparison with the Berend Lehmann Museum’s captioned portrait of ‘great-grandfather Philipp Liebenthal.’
