Born 26 May 1889 · forced from Halberstadt 12 April 1942 · The original deportation list records Kurt at Dominikanerstraße 23. He was forced from Halberstadt on 12 April 1942 with Paula and Hans Wollenberg and taken through the Magdeburg collection camp. Their train departed on 14 April and was recorded in Warsaw on 16 April.

Born 18 April 1877 · forced from Halberstadt 12 April 1942 · The Warsaw Judenrat recorded the train’s arrival on 16 April. No individual record now in the archive documents what happened to Paula afterward; the Federal Archives memorial book includes her among those persecuted and murdered by the Nazi regime.

25 March 1885 — 27 November 1942 · A contemporary Berlin Kultusvereinigung death card records Ernst’s last address as Normannenstraße 2 in Nikolassee and states ‘Verstorben 27.11.42’—died 27 November 1942. The card was processed on 31 December. It establishes the date and Berlin registration, but gives neither a cause of death nor any statement about custody.

26 October 1859 — 25 October 1942 · She was deported from Berlin to Theresienstadt on Transport I/64 on 11 September 1942 and died six weeks later. The ghetto death notice records “enteritis acuta”; such entries must be read within the conditions of starvation, dehydration and untreated illness imposed there.

The ghetto administration’s Todesfallanzeige records Jeanette Reichenbach née Rosenbaum’s death on 25 October 1942, six weeks after her deportation. Its entered cause, ‘Enteritis acuta — Darmkatarrh,’ belongs to the camp bureaucracy and must not be mistaken for an independent medical explanation of a death under starvation, overcrowding and neglect.

The photograph records the family’s encounter with Kurt’s memorial entry. It does not document his fate after the transport reached Warsaw.
