Jeanette Rosenbaum was born at Ebergötzen on 26 October 1859. She married Salomon Gustav Reichenbach in Göttingen in 1883 and built the Wernigerode household around their only son, Fritz. Her dowry helped establish the shop at Breite Straße 7.
Jeanette owned J. Reichenbach while Gustav managed it. Regional records remember her sitting at the till into the 1930s, beneath a façade-wide sign bearing her initial. Fritz later took on the business, and Werner grew up above the shop.
By 15 November 1941 Jeanette was a subtenant in Max Israel Harrwitz’s house at Normannenstraße 2 in Berlin. Her asset declaration records half a room for 22.50 RM a month and notes that her grandson was already in Brazil with his wife and child. The Gestapo issued its confiscation order on 1 September 1942.
She was deported from Berlin to Theresienstadt on Transport I/64 on 11 September 1942 and died six weeks later. The ghetto death notice records “enteritis acuta”; such entries must be read within the conditions of starvation, dehydration and untreated illness imposed there.

What remains uncertain
The records document Jeanette’s room, confiscation order, transport and death. They do not preserve her own account of the months at Normannenstraße 2.
