Max Reichenbach was born in Halberstadt on 15 July 1882. Civil birth register no. 655 names Adolf Reichenbach and Goldine née Marcuse as his parents, making him Paul and Ernst’s brother.

By 1939 Max was recorded at Dohnenstieg 25 in Dahlem, with a connection to the Technische Hochschule Berlin. Louise née Fischer shared the household. The record does not securely establish whether they were married.

The Federal Archives memorial book matches him by exact name, birth date and Halberstadt birthplace. It records imprisonment in Sachsenhausen until 15 December 1938, then his death in Berlin on 18 January 1940 with the fate note Freitod.

The Nazi-era record adds Israel to his name. No birth or family record shows that as a name Max used, so it is not presented here as his middle name.

What remains uncertain

The exact match of name, birth date and birthplace joins the civil birth entry to the memorial record. Louise née Fischer lived in the same household, but the surviving evidence does not securely establish that she was Max’s wife. No Sachsenhausen prisoner card has yet been located.
