English translation
On the anniversary day The anniversary day is the recurrence of a parent’s date of death—not the date of burial—according to the Jewish calendar. On the evening before, an oil lamp or wax candle is lit and remains burning until the following evening. Kaddish is recited during worship and the graves are visited. It is customary to fast, except on Sabbaths and festivals, and to give alms. If the death occurred in Adar of an ordinary year, the anniversary in a leap year is observed in Adar I. If the death occurred in Adar II of a leap year, the anniversary in another leap year is again in Adar II, but in an ordinary year it is in Adar. See the anniversary table at the beginning of this book. Anyone who has not been in a cemetery within thirty days says the following upon entering: Praised are You, Eternal One, our God, King of the world, who created all these in justice, sustained them and provided them with everything necessary; who caused them to die in justice and preserves the memory of all in justice, in order one day to raise them again to life in righteousness. Praised are You, Eternal One, who will awaken the dead.
