Maskir prayer for the salvation of the souls of the departed German translation: What is man that You, O God, still remember him? What is a mortal that You take notice of him? All his striving is vanity; his days pass like a shadow. In the morning he is like a flower in its fairest bloom; by evening he withers and fades. You lead the human being to destruction and then say: “Return, children of humanity.” If people would gain insight, they would think of their end and always keep truth before their eyes. In death a person takes no treasure, and his glory does not follow him. Preserve integrity and justice and heed innocence, for in the end they bring blessedness as their reward. The Lord redeems the souls of His servants, and those who trust in Him will not be condemned. For the father / for the mother: May God remember the soul of [name of the departed], who has entered eternal rest. In his (her) memory I pledge alms. May his (her) soul be bound in the bond of life with the souls of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, Sarah, Rebecca, Rachel and Leah, and with the souls of all the devout, and may he (she) enjoy the fullness of blessedness. Amen. The name of the departed is inserted at the marked place.
