English translation

United States Lines — On board S.S. Manhattan — 3 March [1937] Dear Mother Reichenbach, First of all I wish you a truly good day, since today I shall no longer see you, because we are already standing in port. Everything passes eventually, even the loveliest voyage, and from all the swing and bustle there remains only memory. Surely nothing will be forgotten of the Washington and the Manhattan, which brought us safely and in one piece to the U.S.A. Though the sea was sometimes rough, our spirits never suffered. And whether at bridge, bingo, or “horse-racing,” the “witch” was always on top!
