Gut-casings merchant · probable son of Moritz

Kurt Reichenbach, gut-casings merchant

Recorded in Halberstadt, 1928–1941

A Halberstadt merchant who followed Moritz in the M. Reichenbach gut-casings firm before its forced Aryanization.

The 1928 Halberstadt directory lists merchant Kurt Reichenbach at Sedanstraße 62 and connects him with M. Reichenbach, the gut-casings firm at Gerberstraße 12. On the same pages, another Kurt Reichenbach appears with the J. Reichenbach clothing house at Lindenweg 42. The different businesses and addresses show that the directory was recording two men with the same name.

The same 1928 directory connects merchant Moritz Reichenbach to the M. Reichenbach firm at its Sedanstraße 81 branch. The repeated business, address and telephone details make it very likely that the initial M. stands for Moritz, although no legal record has yet spelled out the proprietor’s full name.

By 1938, the gut-casings Kurt is recorded at the firm’s Gerberstraße 12 premises and privately at Sedanstraße 81, the address associated with Moritz and the firm in 1928. The street register places both properties under Reichenbach, K., gut-casings dealer.

An official Aryanization table preserved by the Landesarchiv Sachsen-Anhalt explicitly names ‘M. Reichenbach, Inh. Kurt Reichenbach (Darmgroßhandlung)’ and names Fritz Tittmann as the Aryanizer. This establishes Kurt as proprietor and business successor. It does not state when or how he acquired the firm.

The family remembers this Kurt as Moritz’s son. Their shared connection to M. Reichenbach, followed by Kurt’s move to Moritz’s former Sedanstraße 81 address, supports that account. No located record yet names Kurt’s parents.

What remains uncertain

The directories and official Aryanization list document Kurt’s work in and later ownership of M. Reichenbach. Family memory identifies him as Moritz’s son, and the business succession and shared address support that possibility, but no located record names his parents. The clothing-house Kurt appears separately in the same directories at a different address.
